EDMONTON — The Edmonton Eskimos have acquired national linebacker Alex Ogbongbemiga in a trade with the Saskatchewan Roughriders in exchange for national defensive tackle Gregory Alexandre.
Ogbongbemiga was selected by the Riders in the third round of the 2016 CFL Draft. He made his CFL debut on July 16.
Prior to the CFL, the Nigerian-born linebacker spent the 2015 season with the Calgary Colts of the Canadian Junior Football League. He recorded 20 defensive tackles and one quarterback sack in four games.
Ogbongbemiga spent three seasons at the University of Calgary (2011-13). In 17 games, he recorded 26.5 defensive tackles and three tackles for a loss. The team won back-to-back-to-back Hardy Cups as Canada West champions in 2011, 2012 and 2013.
Alexandre (6’2 – 277) is currently playing his third CFL season. The 31-year-old Montreal native has spent the last three years with the Edmonton Eskimos after signing with the team in May, 2013.
The University of Montreal product has picked up 23 defensive tackles and five quarterback sacks in 23 career regular season games. He won his first Grey Cup as a member of the Eskimos last season.
Alexandre was originally selected by the Toronto Argonauts in the 5th round (35th overall) of the 2011 CFL Draft.
The Riders also announced the release of national kicker Johnny Mark.
