Reilly: ‘We have been built to do this multiple times’

Mike Reilly thinks this is the start of something good.

Reilly, who led the Eskimos to a 26-20 win over the Ottawa REDBLACKS in the 103rd Grey Cup presented by Shaw, believes Edmonton has the talent to be back in the CFL championship next year. And the year after that.

“We have been built to do this multiple times,” said Reilly, who was named the Shaw Most Valuable Player. “It’s on us to make sure it happens.

“You can’t win the second or third until you win the first. Now we have done that. This is a great league. There are a lot of great football teams. We certainly are going to have our work cut out for us.”

Reilly is only 30 and is hitting his prime. The Eskimos also have young players like receiver Derel Walker, 24, named the CFL rookie of the year this week, cornerback John Ojo, 25, and right guard Matthew O’Donnell, 26.

“I think we have built for the long haul to do this multiple times,” said Reilly, who completed 21 of 36 passes for 269 yards and two touchdowns. “We didn’t get a lot of quick fixes and bring in a bunch of high paycheque free agents.

“We went through a process. That’s why it has taken a little bit of time but we are here now.”
