TORONTO – There is little chance that the Ottawa REDBLACKS are to go two years in a row upgrading through the Draft with the top pick.
Last season, general manager Marcel Desjardins caught many off guard by trading the club’s first top overall pick ever to the Calgary Stampeders.
In an interview with CFL.ca last month, Desjardins said it was “not likely” he would trade the first overall pick this year when asked by host Don Landry.
“You never say never but that’s certainly not the plan,” Desjardins said in the 1-on-1. “Last year we were open to anything … now that we have that initial foundation, our intent is to certainly make that (first overall) selection ourselves.”
The 2014 trade took place just prior to the REDBLACKS going on the clock as they flipped their top selection to the Calgary Stampeders for centre Jon Gott.
“It worked out perfectly,” Desjardins told Landry in response to questions regarding the acquisition of Gott and the selection of star rookie DB Antoine Pruneau later in the ’14 Draft.
Desjardins also spoke about the deptch in this year’s draft class, the Combine and the aggressive approach he and his staff have taken to the off-season in preparation for the franchise’s sophomore year.
