RAY MARIUZ ANNOUNCES RETIREMENT

Hamilton, Ontario – After playing eight seasons in the CFL, Hamilton Tiger-Cats linebacker Ray Mariuz announced his retirement from football today.

Mariuz began his CFL career in Toronto in 2003 after being selected by the Argonauts in the fourth round of the 2003 CFL Canadian Draft. After three seasons and one Grey Cup championship as an Argo, Mariuz signed with the Ticats on February 16, 2006 and would go on to play five seasons in Black and Gold.

The Mississauga, Ontario native finishes his career with 157 defensive tackles, 157 special teams tackles, six quarterback sacks and 11 tackles for a loss. He was nominated as the Ticats Most Outstanding Canadian in 2008 and has served as a special teams captain for the past four seasons. His 76 special teams tackles as a Ticat are the sixth-highest total in team history.

“Walking away from the game that I love was a difficult decision, but I believe it to be the right one for my family and I,” said Mariuz. “I would like to thank my teammates, both past and present, the entire Tiger-Cats organization, and all of the fans of our league for making my eight years so enjoyable. Hamilton fans especially have been amazing, and will be one of the things that I will miss the most about the game. Thank you all for supporting me throughout my football career, and I would greatly appreciate your support in my new career with Royal LePage.”

Mariuz continued, “Living in Burlington year round will allow me to continue to support our beloved Tiger-Cats… and to celebrate when we bring the Grey Cup back to town!”

Mariuz was also an outstanding ambassador in the community who made frequent appearances at charity events, hospitals and schools.

“You can always find players to play this great game, but you don’t often find people like Ray Mariuz. He’s done everything for this organization both on and off the field and exemplifies what we would like our organization to be about – smart, tough, durable, talented and dedicated. We look forward to Ray being a significant part of this organization moving forward,” said President Scott Mitchell.

Before turning pro, Mariuz played four seasons at McMaster University, where he was twice named the Marauders’ defensive MVP.
