As the surging Tiger-Cats get ready to square off with the Toronto Argonauts on Labour Day, the club is asking fans to bring more than their usual vocal enthusiasm to the game.
Purolator is encouraging Hamilton football fans to help support the Purolator Tackle Hunger program by bringing a non-perishable food item or cash donation to volunteers and Tiger-Cats Alumni stationed at the stadium gates. In return, fans will have the opportunity to receive a souvenir photo with the Grey Cup and enter a draw to win two tickets to the 2010 Grey Cup in Edmonton.
In addition to the food drive, every time a CFL quarterback gets sacked throughout the regular season, Purolator will donate the equivalent of the quarterback’s weight in food to the CFL hometown food bank.
Since a record-setting 42,000 pounds were collected at last year’s game, its only natural to expect Ticats fans to step up and break that record.
“Over the past eight years Hamiltonians have helped raise over 131,000 pounds of food,” said Brian Collins, Marketing Specialist for Purolator.
“The Hamilton Food Share serves about 18,600 Hamiltonians every month and out of that approximately 44% are children,” he said.
Since it is a food drive, the results are always translated into pounds, including cash donations.
“Every dollar that is donated is equal to two pounds of food, so what happens is when Ticats fans donate on Monday, the cash and the food will be delivered by Purolator to the Hamilton Food Share by Tuesday,” said Collins.
YoPro frozen treats have already generously donated at least seven pallets (the equivalent of almost 6,300 pounds) to help support the cause.
With the record set by Edmonton so far this season at about 72,000 pounds, Hamiltonians have a real chance to make an impact in their community and set the new standard for donations by obliterating that record and giving generously when they go to the game on Monday.
