Anatomy Of A Play: Garrett McIntyre Seals The Deal

As the play begins, McIntyre lines up at the left defensive end spot in place of the injured Justin Hickman. With no time left on the clock, this will be the final play of regulation, barring any penalties. His job in this base defence will be to stay in his pass-rush lane and contain on his side.

McIntyre gets up field in time to see Jyles fake to Fred Reid and turn to his left for a bootleg. The Winnipeg receiver comes across the field and attempts to set up a lead block for Jyles.

McIntyre reads the bootleg perfectly and stays outside of Jyles, keeping him from gaining the outside edge and forcing him back inside.
“I did my job, just staying outside and playing the boot. The receiver tried to block me but I didn’t even see him, all I saw was the quarterback,” said McIntyre.

Jyles realizes that McIntyre wasn’t fooled by the play action and tries to turn it back inside but a lunging McIntyre just manages to clip his ankle.

After trying to maintain his balance, Jyles falls to the turf, ending any chance of a comeback by Winnipeg.
This play is a perfect example of players staying within their assigned schemes and staying true to their responsibilities. If McIntyre had tryed to be a hero and bit on the fake to Reid, there’s no telling what could have happened with Jyles running free to the right sideline.
