The Anatomy Of A Play

As the play develops, Marcus looks to bounce the ball outside because of an excellent block by #85 Matt Carter, who drives his man towards the sidelines.

Thigpen needs to make a split second decision based on the pursuit of the cover team and where his blockers are located.

“I was trying to take the ball to the outside, but I saw that they were pursuing hard so I made a move back inside and cut it back up the middle,” said Thigpen.

After deciding to take the ball back up the middle, Thigpen receives two outstanding blocks from Darcy Brown and Jason Shivers, who blows John Cornish right off of his feet.  There is now nothing but the punter and daylight in front of Marcus.

“I didn’t even see the two blocks until we looked at the film.  I just saw the opening and veered that way,” said Thigpen.

As John Cornish hits the turf, Thigpen sprints through the space he just occupied.  Will Heyward makes sure that his man isn’t chasing Thigpen up field by delivering a devastating block.

Burke Dales is the only player left with an opportunity to take Thigpen down but he falls down when Thigpen puts a move on him and is about to become a human hurdle.

“I saw the kicker in front of me, I wanted to make him pursue me one way or the other but he just fell down and I was already coming back that way, so I just jumped over him,” said Thigpen.

Thigpen hops over Dales as he stumbles to the turf.

Brandon Browner makes a last ditch effort to catch Thigpen, but a crafty play lets him just escape his grasp and waltz into the end zone for the score.

“While I was running I looked up at the Jumbotron and saw him coming up on me.  I thought I was in the clear but I looked up and there he was, so I picked it back up and he just got a piece of my leg,” said Thigpen.
