THE MATCH-UP
The Hamilton Tiger-Cats will finish up their pre-season schedule with a home game against the Winnipeg Blue Bombers on Sunday. The Tiger-Cats dropped their first pre-season game in 2010, 13-10, against the Toronto Argonauts last Sunday while the Blue Bombers defeated the Montreal Alouettes, 34-10 last week.
The Tiger-Cats and Blue Bombers have met four times in the pre-season since 2007. The Ticats have won three of these meetings with the most recent win coming in 2008 at Ivor Wynne Stadiumby a score of 12-10. The Ticats swept the Blue Bombers in the pre-season in 2007. The Blue Bombers have only won one pre-season meeting since 2007, a 32-21 decision in Winnipeg last year. In the last three seasons, the winner of the pre-season meetings has gone on to lose the season series between the two teams.
The Tiger-Cats will return several regular players to the lineup who sat out last weekend against Toronto.
2009
The 2009 season came right down to the wire between the Tiger-Cats and the Blue Bombers for the right to host the Eastern Semi-Final. The Tiger-Cats defeated the Blue Bombers 39-17 in the final game of the regular season, which eliminated the Blue Bombers from the playoffs and ensured the Ticats would host the Eastern Semi-Final at Ivor Wynne Stadium.
The Ticats and Blue Bombers met two other times in the 2009 season. The Tiger-Cats defeated the Blue Bombers in week three (25-13) at Ivor Wynne Stadium in the 1960’s Retro Game. The Blue Bombers would win the second regular season meeting between the two teams at Ivor Wynne Stadium in week fifteen, defeating the Tiger-Cats 38-28. The 2009 season marked the first time the Ticats had won the season series against the Blue Bombers since 2004.
The Blue Bombers finished the 2009 season 7-9, good enough for third place in the East Division. Head Coach Mike Kelly was fired in the offseason and was replaced by new Head Coach and former Saskatchewan Roughriders Offensive Coordinator Paul LaPolice.
PLAYERS TO WATCH
Arland Bruce III / WR / Hamilton
Bruce has been putting on a show throughout training camp, routinely making highlight-reel grabs during practices. Sunday will be his first chance to go up against a defensive back wearing something other than Black and Gold.
Demetris Summers / RB / Hamilton
Summers’ 77-yard punt return was the most electrifying play of the Ticats pre-season opener in Toronto last week. He also added a team-high 24 yards on the ground. Summers is trying to earn a spot as the team’s kick returner and back-up to DeAndra’ Cobb.
Buck Pierce / QB / Winnipeg
After five seasons and over 8,700 passing yards with the B.C. Lions, Pierce joined the Bombers during the off-season. Pierce looked sharp in the Bombers exhibition victory over Montreal last week, throwing for 105 yards and a touchdown.
Chris Davis / WR / Winnipeg
Chris Davis will return to Ivor Wynne Stadium on Sunday as a member of the Winnipeg Blue Bombers after spending part of last season with the Tiger-Cats. Davis was released after hauling in 34 passes for 440 yards in nine games with the Cats. He’s trying to earn a spot in the Bombers re-vamped receiving corps, which features veterans like Adarius Bowman and Terrence Edwards.
