Training Camp Primer: Defensive Line

The Ticats defence took a large step forward last season, thanks in large part to much improved play along the defensive line.  The ‘D’ was able to put pressure on opposing team’s quarterbacks and stay stout against the run, finishing third in the league in total yards allowed.

The Black and Gold took advantage of General Manager Bob O’Billovich’s keen eye for talent, starting three rookies along the defensive line in Khari Long, Demonte’ Bolden, and Justin Hickman.

Long and Hickman terrorized opposing quarterbacks all season, recording ten and seven sacks respectively and will look to build on their impressive ’09 campaign’s this season.

Garrett McIntyre proved to be a versatile, high-energy player in his rookie season, capable of playing both defensive end and defensive tackle.  McIntyre chipped in with 19 tackles and 1 sack last year after starting nine games.

Darrell Adams will return as the veteran of the starting four, entering his fourth season with the Ticats and will be looking to continue being a solid run-stuffing presence in the middle of the line.

Canadian Matt Kirk will come into camp looking to improve on his career-high four sacks after appearing in all 18 games last season and will compete with fellow canucks Jermaine Reid, Yahia Dalloul and draft pick Eddie Steele for roster spots.

Import newcomers Chris White, Josh Gaines and Albert Smith will be asked to come in and show the same promise that earned them an invitation to camp if they want to make the opening day roster.  The Ticats may add another free agent to compete before rookie camp kicks off on Thursday.
