TORONTO — The Toronto Argonauts and Hamilton Tiger-Cats are used to doing battle on the gridiron. On Saturday May 15 however, members of the two clubs will be joining forces in the Ron Lancaster Memorial Climb as part of the 4th annual Climb for Cancer.

The pledge based fundraising event, held in Hamilton at the Chedoke Golf Course Escarpment Stairs, is organized by Toronto Argonaut and Hamilton native Bryan Crawford. Participants climb the nearly 300 steps of the Hamilton escarpment stairs for the duration of one hour in support of Juravinski Cancer Centre (JCC).

Crawford is proud to be a part of helping to fight against a disease that has affected so many people. “My second year in the CFL I lost my RB coach at Queen’s, Berkeley Brean to cancer,” he recalls. “He was one of the best men I have ever had the fortune of knowing.”

“The Climb gives me an opportunity to do something in my own community, while helping support one of the best cancer centres in the province in the JCC.”

In addition to providing radiation and chemotherapy treatment for patients, the JCC also provides a wide variety of services including genetic and psychosocial counselling, nutritional services and education to help patients and their families.

The Centre is actively involved in laboratory research and clinical trials to discover and apply better treatment methods.  Prevention and screening programs are also offered to help decrease the burden of cancer.  To date, over 1,000 participants have raised over $85,000 while climbing the equivalent of Mount Everest over 70 times.
