Friday, May 7, will mark the opening day of the “Be The Best” offensive and defensive linemen camp, hosted by the University of Western Ontario.
The three-day camp, started by ex-Hamilton Tiger-Cat Dave Hack, teaches skills and fundamentals that are key to playing along the line.
“It’s a way to help kids at a position that’s often overlooked and underappreciated,” said Hack. “We’re really trying to get these guys some extra special attention.”
The camp, in its second year, takes place over three days and offers accommodation, meals, one-on-one instruction and guest speakers. Kids will get the opportunity to be coached by ex-players and coaches, including Western Head Coach Greg Marshall, who has been instrumental in the development of this camp.
“When I first decided I wanted to run a camp up here I reached out to coach Marshall and he was real positive about the idea,” said Hack.
“We ran the first one at Western last year and it was a big success with about 85 kids coming out,” he said.
Attendees will get the chance to get close instruction from former and current coaches and players including ex-Mustang and current San Diego Charger Vaughn Martin.
“You have a lot of guys that have played the position before that are instructors and a lot of coaches that are coaching or have coached the position at a high level”, said Hack.
