CIS Blog: Meerveld’s Muses #7

Winning is a good feeling.

Before Saturday afternoon’s Red and Blue bowl at York University, a calendar year had passed since the Varsity Blues’ last win and more than a decade since our last road win.  That’s a decade full of long bus rides home from all parts of this great province with heads hung low and empty stares out large Greyhound windows at the passing highway countryside.

It seemed somehow ironic and unfair then that, as the team bus pulled out of the parking lot filled with young men feeling the satisfaction of a job well done, our trip was only mere minutes from being over.

It was an enjoyable half-hour.

Those moments are not ones that make it into next day’s newspaper, nor are they the first you think of when you reminisce on a game, season, or career. Nevertheless they are the simple perks of a winning football program – something we all want to get used to.

I am off to the ice tub with a textbook in hand – it’s the not so glamorous side of life for a university football player.

We look forward to seeing you Thursday night at Mac.
