Games like the other night are tough to take. Obviously, when you face a nationally ranked team like Laurier it is always going to be a challenge, but the game itself produced a couple reminders.
First, this team has taken large strides over the past year, but feel-good stories of instant and continued success in the face of adversity are reserved for Disney movies and fairy tales. We have a good group of hardworking guys here, but that doesn’t mean adversity ceases to exist.
It is easy to sit here and say all the right things but it is incumbent upon each and every one of us to accept this challenge and subsequently overcome it.
The other reminder was a topic of conversation between a few players in the locker room after the game. It was the simple yet admiring acknowledgement of our fans dedication. The Varsity Blues football team doesn’t garner the highest attendance numbers in the league and the school as a whole is often criticized for lacking a community feel but there is no doubt in my mind we have the best fans in the OUA.
Student groups, other sports teams, families and friends are as vocal and as dedicated a bunch as you will find. As the 4th quarter reached its midpoint on Monday night, I took a moment to look up in the stands – they were as full as they have ever been despite the lopsided score. It is this group of people that is one of the reasons this school is worth playing for, hard work is worth doing and adversity is worth overcoming. We look forward to sharing the joy of many wins with you in the weeks, months and years to come.
A trip down the 401 and on to Windsor this weekend…
