Scoring on a blocked convert attempt

QUESTION #1

Team A scores a touchdown and on the extra point attempt Team B blocks the kick and then picks up the ball and returns the ball across Team A’s Goal Line. Does Team B get two points?

ANSWER

As always, great questions and I enjoy answering them. First I would like to explain the difference between Team A and Team B. The rule book states, “The team that puts the ball in play shall be identified as Team A and the other shall be named Team B.”

The answer to Question #1 is that Team B gets two points. From the rule book, “If Team B legally gains possession during an unsuccessful convert attempt (i.e. interception of forward pass, recovery of fumble or blocked kick), it may score two points by advancing the ball across Team A’s Goal Line.”

QUESTION #2

Team A attempts a 2-point conversion and the quarterback’s pass is intercepted by Team B in the Team B endzone. The player who makes the interception takes a knee. Is the ball dead?

ANSWER

This play happened in Week #7 when the B.C. Lions played in Toronto.  The Lions (Team A) attempted a two point convert in the fourth quarter and the Argonauts (Team B) intercepted the pass in the endzone.

If the player who intercepted the ball had taken a knee and stayed down, the play would have been blown dead.  Instead, the player quickly put the ball on the turf and no whistle was blown.  A very alert Toronto player picked up the ball and proceeded towards B.C.’s goal line.  If he was successful in his attempt to score, the Argonauts would have been awarded two points.

Now if a B.C. player had picked up that ball in the end zone after the Toronto player put it on the ground, the Lions would have been awarded two points.
