CIS Blog: Meerveld’s Muses #2

The Night before the Day of…

Quarterback Andrew Gillis was one of many football players sleeping over at my apartment tonight (Aug.23) – air mattresses and futons are hardly a glamorous existence but they don’t seem to mind.

I haven’t lived all that long on this earth but I suspect that it is late night conversations just mere hours away from the start to another season between quarterback and receiver that are among those memories most vivid when you look back at these days 30 years from now.

On one hand we talk about the possibility of greatness. It is this kind of conversation that I think motivates every single member of this football team all off-season long. But on the eve of camp that discussion is short lived as there will be time soon enough to go out and live it. Instead tonight’s conversation is one of perspective and healthy respect for the time we have been given.

Football, more than any other sport, is so fleeting – if you blink you might miss it.

Neither of us have any idea what the next two months hold in store but there is a strange comfort that comes living with the knowledge that we have spent the entire off-season controlling the controllables and now it’s time to let the rest fall where it may.

For more information on the Varsity Blues football team you can visit their website at
