CIS Blog: Meerveld’s Muses #1

A little less than a year ago some 2,500 people settled into the friendly confines of Varsity Stadium. Passers by may have recognized the importance of this game, they may not have. Some students blocks away moving into residences and eagerly awaiting the inception of another year of school cared about the outcome, some did not. But as the sun disappeared behind the skyscrapers on that warm September’s eve, the roar of the crowd was an encouraging reminder that there was a group of people who still believed in a program that had long since been forgotten by those outside the university.

I would like to think that if one of the principal purposes of sport is to bring people together in celebration than that night we had finally done our part.

Like any good story though, it reaches its conclusion and the end of the season signalled the last chapter in a story book that was filled with ignominious records, heartbreaks, and the satisfaction that comes with success. With a new season comes a new story.

I am Drew Meerveld, 3rd year wide receiver and a captain of the Varsity Blues football team. Come along as I take you inside training camp and a look behind the scenes at 2-a-days to opening day and beyond in a season in the life of a university football player.

For more information on the Varsity Blues football team you can visit their website at VarsityBlues.ca. U of T opens their season on Monday, September 7th at home against the Wilfrid Laurier Golden Hawks.
