The first day of the Ticats two-day rookie camp concluded with an afternoon practice session at McMaster’s Ron Joyce Stadium on Thursday. Here’s a look at what transpired on the field after 2:00 p.m….
– The enthusiasm from the morning’s session carried over to the afternoon, as a crowd of about 40 fans enjoyed the weather and the entertainment provided by the energetic crew on the field.
– General Manager Bob O’Billovich took in the afternoon session, just a little over two weeks after undergoing hip surgery. Obie was greeted by the Ticats coaching staff and members of the media on hand.
– Rookie receiver Cassidy Doneff impressed during one-on-ones, making three straight over-the-shoulder grabs look easy.
– Receiver Aaron Fairooz picked up where he left off after his dominant performance this morning. Fairooz caught everything in sight and continued to use his height to his advantage when battling smaller defensive backs for the ball.
– Offensive lineman Simeon Rottier showed a little fire this afternoon. The first overall draft pick in the 2009 CFL Canadian Draft got into a minor tussle with fellow rookie Garrett McIntyre during blocking drills. The two were separated immediately without further incident.
– Rottier’s linemate and the Black and Gold’s supplementary draft choice, Zac Carlson, was commended by Offensive Coordinator Mike Gibson for his work against defensive lineman Mike McFadden.
– Canadian Football Hall of Famer and Ticats legend Angelo Mosca made his debut at training camp this afternoon, spending time on the sideline with Bob O’Billovich.
– Quinton Porter looked sharp throughout the day, but would likely want a mulligan on an errant pass that was picked off by defensive back Chris Davis.
– Running back DeAndra’ Cobb wowed the crowd with an extremely quick spin move to elude defenders. Over two seasons at Michigan State, Cobb excelled as a kick returrner, running back 64 kickoffs for 1,632 yards and a school-record four touchdowns.
