Hamilton, Ontario – The Hamilton Tiger-Cats selected eight players in today’s CFL Canadian Draft, including Alberta offensive Lineman Simeon Rottier with the first overall selection.
Rottier (pronounced Row-teer), a 6-6, 286-pound native of Westlock, Alberta was named a 2008 first team All-Canadian and was a CanWest All-Star three times while anchoring the offensive line at the University of Alberta. The #1 ranked prospect on the CFL’s Scouting Bureau list also earned 2007 second team All-Canadian honours.
The Ticats dealt the third overall selection to the B.C. Lions in exchange for the sixth and 13th overall picks. With the sixth overall pick, the Ticats nabbed St. Mary’s WR/FB Darcy Brown. The 6-4, 250-pound native of Mississauga, Ontario has the ability to excel at a number of positions on offence. He caught 28 passes for 385 yards and five touchdowns over the past two seasons.
With the sixth pick in the second round, the Cats selected New Hampshire defensive back Ryan Hinds. The 6-1, 190-pound native of Toronto, Ontario recorded 53 tackles and five interceptions last season and still has a year of NCAA eligibility remaining.
The Black and Gold drafted UBC defensive lineman Scott McCuaig with their next pick, the sixth selection of the third round. McCuaig, a 6-4, 240-pound native of Surrey, British Columbia led the CIS with 9.5 sacks in 2008 and was Canada West’s nominee for the J.P. Metras Trophy. He was named an All-Canadian in 2008 and a Canada West All-Star in 2007 and 2008.
With the first pick of the fifth round, the Ticats selected Laval running back Guillaume Allard-Caméus. The 6-0, 215-pound native of Laval, Quebec carried the ball 97 times for 481 yards and six touchdowns for the 2008 Vanier Cup champions. He also caught 15 passes for 140 yards and one touchdown.
The Cats used their second pick of the fifth round, the 38th overall selection, to grab Simon Fraser DB Raymond Wladichuk. The 6-0, 171-pound native of Vernon, British Columbia racked up 43.5 defensive tackles and two interceptions with the Clan in 2008.
The Black and Gold used their final two picks on Washburn receiver Cassidy Doneff and Indiana State offensive lineman Bill McGrath.
Doneff, a 6-0, 183-pound native of Cochrane, Alberta transferred to Washburn in 2007 from the University of Calgary. McGrath, a 6-5, 275-pound native of Moose Jaw, Saskatchewan still has one year of NCAA eligibility remaining.
