Today, the 9th season of the Cops, Cats and Caring students was launched at Cathedral High School in Hamilton.
Cops, Cats and Caring students is a partnership between Hamilton Police Service and the Canadian Football League’s Hamilton Tiger-Cats Football Club. It involves members from both ‘teams’ playing basketball in friendly competition with area secondary schools.
Last year’s season donations from the 13 games played totaled $24,231 for the McMaster Children’s Hospital. For 2009, the funds will be split between the Children’s Hospital and St. Joseph’s Hospital.
“This couldn’t be a more rewarding program,” said Police Services Board Chairman Bernie Morelli. “Every year, this partnership with Hamilton Police and the Hamilton Tiger Cats makes a very valuable contribution to our community and even more importantly creates an opportunity to connect with youth.”
“The Tiger-Cats are once again proud and excited to take part in Cops, Cats and Caring Students,” said Ticats President Scott Mitchell. “We’re excited for the opportunity to partner with the Hamilton Police, connect with local youth and make a difference in our community.”
“I am proud to be an ongoing partner and supporter of the efforts of the Hamilton Police Service, the Hamilton Tiger-Cats, McMaster Children’s Hospital and St. Joseph’s Hospital”, said Ron Foxcroft, President Fox 40 International. “I encourage community agencies to work together to support our City’s efforts and charities for children.”
Since 2001, Cops and Cats have played basketball games against local Hamilton High Schools to raise money for charity. This initiative has not only developed better relationships between the police and students, but also raised a total of $92,000.00 in eight years for the McMaster Children’s Hospital.
