TORONTO — The Globe and Mail announced its annual power list for 2009 on Wednesday. The list distinguishes people who have the power to influence Canadian sport in the next 12 to 15 months. CFL Commissioner Mark Cohon made the list at #6, moving up 12 places from 2008. BC Lions’ owner David Braley was ranked 22nd on the Globe’s list.
“It’s an honour to be recognized as number six on the Globe and Mail’s ‘power list’ of the 30 most influential people in the world of Canadian sport,” said Cohon. “But this honour clearly belongs to our fans. After all, the Globe cited our league’s strong attendance and television ratings, which are driven by the commitment and passion of CFL fans.
“These are tough times for the world economy, and Canada is not immune from these challenges. And while we are better positioned than others, because our league is so affordable, accessible and authentic, we are going to need our fans’ support more than ever in 2009. The Globe’s vote of confidence in the power of our league is really an expression of confidence in our fans, confidence that grew as they rallied to our league in 2008, and confidence in their willingness to do so again in 2009. Thank you, CFL fans, for keeping our league strong.”
