The Calgary Stampeders came into Friday’s home finale at Ivor Wynne stadium looking to clinch the West, but before they could claim top spot, the Stamps had to win in a hostile environment.
Calgary had lost five out of their last seven trips to Steeltown, including their last two visits to the Hammer. The Stamps brought with them the league’s best run defence to combat the Ticats top rushing attack. In the end Calgary prevailed 28-17.
“We feel like it (Ticats) is going in the right direction. This team will be better next year,” said coach Marcel Bellefeuille.
Playing in their third game in 13 days, the Black and Gold came out aggressive through the air. QB Quinton Porter showed “confidence and poise,” said Bellefeuille. He showed great field vision when his receivers were defended. Ticat fans should be happy he’ll be in training camp again in ’09.
Prechae Rodriguez came into Friday’s contest with 59 receptions for 909 yards and six TDs. A potential rookie of the year candidate, he should close out ’08 with over 1000 yards and lead the team in receptions, yards and TDs by a receiver.
Big 6’4” 220-pound Earnest Jackson got the start at slotback and looked like a warrior between the lines. Built like a linebacker, yet quick and agile, his strength and speed demanded respect from the Stamps secondary. Jackson came through with the biggest reception of the night stretching out for a 37-yard catch.
The Ticat defense made some noise against the Stamps despite giving up 28 points. Again it was the usual suspects; Markeith Knowlton added five tackles to his team high 84, including a sack and interception. Cornelius Anthony led all Ticat tacklers with six.
“They still are making some strides,” said Coach Bellefeuille, “but we feel like we know who the core players are for next year.”
