After an impressive win last week, the Tiger-Cats were unable to beat Montreal for the second time in a row on Monday, as the Alouettes defeated the Ticats 42-11 at Percival Molson Stadium. Markeith Knowlton made 11 tackles and forced a fumble while newcomer Chris Davis led all Ticats receivers with six catches for 28 yards.
Anthony Calvillo and the Alouettes struck first as the veteran quarterback completed his first six passes, the last one a 10-yard touchdown toss to receiver Jamel Richardson, to put the home side ahead by seven.
Jo Jo Walker helped the Ticats 47-yard field goal. Ticats quarterback Quinton Porter would follow Walker’s big return up with a 50-yard scoring drive that finished with the rookie pivot dashing 10 yards to get across the goal line, equalizing the score at seven.
The Ticats were unable to capitalize on a Jykine Bradley interception near the end of the first quarter, so the score remained tied at seven after 15 minutes.
The Als took an 8-7 lead after Damon Duval’s 42-yard field goal missed wide right 11 seconds into the frame.
Montreal would increase their lead a couple minutes later. After Khalil Carter picked off an errant Porter throw and returned the ball to the Hamilton 25-yard line, Calvillo needed just one play to find Jamel Richardson for the pair’s second touchdown connection of the game.
Each team traded field goals midway through the second quarter to make the score 18-10.
Richardson would make his third touchdown reception of the game with 10 seconds remaining in the half, this time from backup quarterback Adrian McPherson in a short yardage package, giving the Als a 25-10 lead at the half.
The Ticats began the second half aggressively, as Bo Smith recovered a perfectly placed onside kick by Nick Setta. Unfortunately, the Ticats would lose running back Kenton Keith with an arm injury during the possession. Setta finished the drive by adding a 63-yard punt single to bring the Cats within 14.
Calvillo kept the Alouettes in control on their next possession, as he put together a seven-play drive that ended with the veteran keeping the ball himself and running for a three-yard major to extend the Alouettes lead to 21.
After Ticats defensive lineman Darrell Adams recorded his team-leading sixth sack, the Alouettes finished the third quarter with another score as Calvillo threw his third touchdown pass of the game to Ben Cahoon, which put Montreal up 42-11.
Following an uneventful fourth quarter which saw neither team add to their point totals, the Ticats would leave Montreal with their 12th loss of the season.
