Monday Mailbag: August 11

By: Justin Boone

If you have questions for myself, caretaker Bob Young, President Scott Mitchell, General Manager Bob O’Billovich, Head Coach Charlie Taaffe, or anyone else in the Ticats organization, forward them to blackandgold@ticats.ca and look for you answers in the Monday Mailbag.

Q: Now that’s how it’s done!  Complete domination for 60 minutes.  Aside from the “W” it really shows the depth that our boys have when you have such significant injuries as we did to come out with that performance was just amazing.  My voice is completely gone!  We were aggressive, strong, anticipated well. Richie was amazing, as was Caulley, I could go on and on naming guys individually, but this was one of the strongest team efforts I have seen in a long time.  We need to build on it now, play in the Peg like we played tonight.  Then we have the Labour Day Classic, there’s no need to say anything there because the guys are always motivated for that one. Take care.

Love the enthusiasm. It was a great game, reminiscent of last year’s win against Winnipeg in Week Six. It often seems like the Cats have to fight tooth and nail for everything they get, but finally the bounces started going their way, either due to good karma or proper execution. You be the judge. The need for depth in pro sports is obvious, but it’s becoming more and more apparent recently in the CFL with injuries striking every team, no club harder than the defending Grey Cup champs, who seem to be perservering no matter who goes down. Richie and Terry played exceptional, and that’s a testament to the talent on the roster and the cohesiveness of the locker room. The latter being the more important of the two over a long season.

Q: I’m stuck at the stadium so I don’t get to see Ticats TV Live until I get home, but it’s cool hearing the guys talk right after the game, most of them are still dripping with sweat. Is coach Taaffe OK with them doing these interviews? Does he get to speak to the team first and then they do it, or do they leave the field and go right to the studio? I know he does his radio interview, but has coach Taaffe ever thought about doing a post-game interview himself for Ticats TV?

Let’s take a look at the timeline after the final whistle of a home game. The players filter into the locker room and coach Taaffe addresses the club. Then following a brief prayer, the players shower and get into their regular clothes. The minute the prayer is over, the top performers from that night are lined up for Ticats TV Live. While coach is doing his radio show, the handful of players selected step in front of the camera with host Candace Devai. With all his post-game commitments, coach Taaffe doesn’t really have an opportunity to get interviewed, but he’s more than happy to let the guys give their unedited reactions for Ticats.ca.

Q: Does Ticats Ambush on Ticats TV announce where they’re going or do they just show up in random cities? I can’t wear my Ticats stuff to work everyday, but I could probably have it on one day of the week.

Unless you work at the Ticats front office, you probably won’t be doing your career any favours by sporting a Zeke Moreno jersey to that morning meeting. But if you are looking to get noticed by Stripes and Ticats TV host Candace Devai then you can watch the last Ticats Ambush Segment. Before signing off, Candace mentions where they will be next and although they don’t give a date, it’s usually on the day of away games. You never know, your boss might just show up dressed in Black and Gold as well.

Q: I was walking out of the stadium on Thursday and the vibe was impossible to describe. It felt so good beating the Argos at the Rogers Centre, but beating them here was something totally different. It feels like we just took on the school bully and kicked his butt. Go Cats!

-Daniel Cartwright

I had to edit that e-mail to make a little more PG, but I think you still get the idea of what Daniel was saying. Both wins were huge and the team now has two games that they should be favoured in, giving them at least a chance to be 4-5 after Labour Day. The rivalry with Toronto makes last week’s game sweeter for sure, but the Argos won’t be laying down to be swept on September 1, and neither will the Bombers next week. In Winnipeg, there are rumours about bringing in every half decent free agent out there to shake things up. They’re one step away from bringing in the guys on the TSN panel (I’m sure Climie, Dunigan and Schultz would love that). Toronto sits just one game up on Hamilton for second in the east. What a difference a week makes, and what a difference three weeks could make if the Tabbies do in fact make good on their next two divisional contests.
