Three Up, Three Down For Cops and Cats

The third quarter of the Cops and Cats Charity basketball schedule finished up on Friday, and the team continues to post victory after victory moving to 10-0 on the season.

It was a tough trio of games against Bishop Ryan High School, Waterdown High School, and Cardinal Newman High School, but the team kept their hopes of an undefeated season alive thanks to the contributions of veterans Sandy Beveridge, Tony Miles, and Ray Mariuz as well as newcomer Richie Williams.

In the first game of the week, the Bishop Ryan Celtics got off to a great start and actually held the lead at halftime, marking the first time all season an opponent was able to do so. The Cops and Cats regrouped, and thanks to the hard work down low by officer Barry Munger, were able to comeback in the second half and take the win, 51-48.

Heading into their match-up against the Waterdown Warriors, the team from previous years what was in store. Waterdown is the only school that plays a team with a roster made up only of teachers, and therefore the game is a bit more physical. That strategy failed in the end, as the Cops and Cats garnered their ninth win of the year, 49-40. The most notable moment of the game may have come at halftime when Tony Miles, who has yet to touch the field for the Tabbies but has lit up the basketball court, competed against TC in a dance-off. The jury is still out on who had better moves.

With 24 hours rest, the Cops and Cats took the court Friday against Cardinal Newman, facing the school’s boys’ team, which featured some quick and elusive players. Unfortunately they were undersized and outmanned against a deep Cops and Cats bench en route to a 49-38 final.

Three games remain on the docket, including the last contest of the year St. Mary’s High School who was the only team to beat the Cops and Cats last season.
