Draft Q&A with… Shea Emry

Q: What did you know heading into last month’s E-Camp?

Emry: I talked to a few guys who have been through it a few years ago. They told me to bring all the shoes that you can because the surfaces are different and you don’t where you’ll be doing each event. So thanks to them I was well prepared.

Q: Each event is almost library quiet as scouts look on, it has to be pretty nerve-racking out there?

Emry: It was definitely intense. When you’re doing the bench, it’s all quiet and all you can hear is the little “Clink, Clink, Clink.” Then afterwards there’s more sound, but it’s pretty intense. There are cameras and all the eyes are watching you, but the pressure fades and you just get in the zone and perform.

Q: One of the funnier moments of the E-Camp came when you were doing the bench and on your final rep you threw out a long-winded expletive as you forced the bar up.

Emry: (Laughs)… Yeah. (Covers his mouth jokingly) Bleep! That’s just me being angry with myself, I was happy with my performance but I expected more.

Q: Does your agent give you any idea where you might be going in the draft?

Emry: He says things, and I think things, but really you can’t tell anything until you get that phone call on April 30.

Q: How did you first get into football, which led you to this point?

Emry: My first year of playing football was in grade eight at Vancouver College. I played running back, quarterback and safety. My first year playing linebacker was only two and a half years ago, three years ago, so I’m still new kind of new to the position.

Q: What were you like as a kid back then?

Emry: Athletic, always jumping around doing something, playing football, running track, basketball, lacrosse, soccer, whatever.

Q: What’s your most memorable moment in your fairly young football career so far?

Emry: My first actual college football game, walking into the tunnel against San Jose State, it just gave me that tingle in the back of my neck.

Q: Who would you compare yourself to that’s already in the league?

Emry: I’ve been compared to Javier Glatt cause I went to the same school he went to and we’re about the same stature. So if I had to compare myself, I guess sure, Javier.

Q: You seem like your very motivated as a player, what fuels Shea Emry?

Emry: My dad always tells me, be the first to the first hurdle because I used to be a track runner, so he tells me to be the first to the first hurdle and the rest will sort itself out. That’s something I write on my tape before games.
