The More Things Change…

Not even a week into the 2008 free agency period, and CFL fans are left wonder what might have been. The free agent frenzy was dulled considerably as some of the most highly sought after players decided to re-sign with their current clubs. Tom Canada, Matt Dominguez, Dan Goodspeed, Matt Sheridan, and Eddie Davis all spurned the idea of leaving their cities to catch on with new teams. Thanks for killing the excitement guys.

Tony The Tiger-Cat
The Black and Gold made a much-needed addition to their receiving corps with the signing of Tony Miles. Three seasons ago, the 5-foot-9, 171-pound pass catcher hauled in 91 receptions and eight touchdowns, not to mention 1,275 yards. If he can help invigorate the Tabbies passing game this season, his return to Steeltown will be a massive success.

Don’t Let Your Babies Grow Up To Be Cowboys
It began with Dwight Anderson, it continued with Richard Karikari, and it culminated in JoJuan Armour turning his back on a verbal agreement with the Alouettes to join his two former Ticat teammates in Calgary. All three defensive players will be part of the Stampeders defense that allowed the most points per game (28.7), in 2007.

Keeping It In the East
Canadian lineman Jeff Keeping left the Argos, but stayed in the East as he joined the Alouettes. Keeping split his time last season between Toronto’s offensive and defensive lines.

The Igloos Getting Full
Defensive tackle Dario Romero (6’3) and offensive lineman Garrick Jones (6’5) add a combined 612 pounds to the Eskimos roster. After a pair of playoff-less years, Edmonton is very literally “beefing” up for a chance at a post-season berth.

Easier Said Than Done
(Quote of the Week)

“There were so many unanswered questions at that time (in November). We knew my wife was diagnosed with cancer. We didn’t know how she would respond to the treatments. Now, the majority of the thoughts are positive because of the way it’s been going. She feels great and she looks great.”

Anthony Calvillo addressed a gathering of media members last week in regards to his wife’s battle with cancer. Happy with the progress she is making, the veteran QB is excited to get back on the field for the 2008 season.

In Case You Blinked
(News from the Week)

With all the free agency news, one new contract went slightly overlooked this weekend. B.C. locked up running back Joe Smith to a three-year contract extension, after the Houston Texans reportedly made him an offer. However, like many NFL contracts, there was no guarantee that Smith would crack the club’s regular season roster and now he returns to the Lions following a 1,500-yard, 18-touchdown campaign.
