Ticats Promote Refrigerator Roundup Program

The Hamilton Tiger-Cats are helping Horizon Utilities and the Ontario Power Authority (OPA) to kick its new Refrigerator Roundup Program into full gear.

“People are now beginning to realize that the old clunker in the basement is a terrible energy hog and that new fridges use less than half the electricity of an older one,” said Peter Love, Chief Conservation Officer, OPA. “Encouraging people to give up their old refrigerators really does contribute to a culture of conservation in Ontario.”

The Great Refrigerator Roundup is designed to remove older, inefficient fridges from the electricity system. Often located in basements or garages, these older fridges, are underused use two to three times more electricity than new refrigerators.

“The Ticats organization is proud to team up with community leaders such as Horizon Ultilities and the OPA. We are very supportive of this initiative and are excited to do our part in the Hamilton and surrounding communities” said Adam Provost, Executive Vice President of the Hamilton Tiger-Cats.

“Household appliances account for about 20 per cent of the average homeowner’s electricity bill,” said Max Cananzi, President & CEO of Horizon Utilities. “The Great Refrigerator Roundup program is a great way to take a bite out of your electricity bill. Unplug that old refrigerator and feel good about your contribution to the environment and your pocket book.”

Under The Great Refrigerator Roundup, old refrigerators will be picked up for free, including being hauled out of the basement, and then disposed in an environmentally friendly manner.
