Hamilton, Ontario – The Hamilton Tiger-Cats announced today that they have signed import receivers Jovan Witherspoon and Kendall Newson.
“We’re happy to add two young receivers to our roster,” said General Manager Marcel Desjardins. “Jovan is a tall, athletic receiver with great speed whom we’ve had our eye on for a while whereas Kendall is another big target, with exceptionally soft hands that can extend for the ball and is very capable after the catch. They will both have a great opportunity to showcase their skills during training camp.”
Witherspoon, a 6-3, 210-pound native or Fort Wayne, Indiana attended the New York Jets training camp last season before being allocated to NFL Europe’s Hamburg Sea Devils. Prior to turning pro, the 25-year old played for Notre Dame, Northwestern and Harper College before playing his final two collegiate seasons with Central Michigan.
Newson, a 6-1, 197-pound Decatur, Georgia native was a member of the NFL’s Miami Dolphins for three seasons (2003-05). Newson attended Middle Tennessee State where he started 42 of 43 career games at wide receiver, recording 238 receptions for 3,074 yards and 21 touchdowns. His 238 receptions and 3,074 receiving yards are both career school records and he sits tied for second on the Blue Raiders all-time list with 21 receiving touchdowns.
