Hamilton, Ontario – The Hamilton Tiger-Cats announced today that head coach Charlie Taaffe has hired Rod Rust as Defensive Coordinator and Mike Working as Offensive Coordinator.
“I am pleased to add Rod and Mike to our coaching staff,” said Taaffe. “It was very important for me to have continuity on my staff. Having worked previously with Rod and known Mike for as long as I have, I know that their knowledge, insight and experience will significantly help this team.”
Rust joins the Ticats with an extraordinary amount of coaching experience under his belt. Most recently, Rust served as the Winnipeg Blue Bombers’ defensive coordinator in 2005. Rust has also had two stints with the Montreal Alouettes, the latest spanning five seasons from 1997-2001 where he was the Als’ linebackers coach, defensive coordinator and eventually head coach in 2001. He got his first taste of professional coaching in 1973 when he was named defensive coordinator of the Alouettes under head coach Marv Levy, a position he held for two seasons.
Rust has also held multiple coaching positions with several NFL teams, including a stint as head coach of the New England Patriots in 1990.
Working spent last season with the Winnipeg Blue Bombers as the quarterbacks coach and pass game coordinator. He also gained professional coaching experience as receivers coach with the Detroit Lions from 1983-1985.
Working also held various offensive coaching positions at the collegiate level with Appalachian State, Wake Forest, West Virginia and Tennessee-Knoxville.
