Cats Stock Up On Young Canadian Talent

Hamilton, Ontario – The Hamilton Tiger-Cats announced the signings of three non-import players today. Offensive linemen Chris Sutherland and Peter Hogarth as well as wide receiver Ivan Birungi will attend training camp with the Ticats this spring.

“Successful teams in this league are built upon the strength of their Canadian players. Today we have added three more talented, young players that have a chance to make an impact on our team next season,” said general manager Marcel Desjardins.

Sutherland was the Ticats fourth round (28th overall) selection of the 2006 CFL Canadian College Draft. Last year, the 6-4, 310-pound tackle returned to the University of Saskatchewan for his final season of CIS eligibility after taking part in the Ticats training camp. Sutherland was named both a first team CIS All-Star and a Canada West All-Star and helped lead the Huskies to a berth in the Vanier Cup.

Hogarth joins the Black and Gold following a five-year CIS career with Ottawa (2006) and McMaster (2002-2005). In 2006, Hogarth was named an OUA second-team all-star with the GeeGees. The 6-4, 300-pound tackle was selected by the Saskatchewan Roughriders in the fourth round (29th overall) of the 2006 CFL Canadian College Draft.

Birungi, a 6-4, 226-pound wide receiver was named a 2006 second team CIS All-Star and an AUS All-Star after recording 47 receptions for 759 yards and seven touchdowns in eight games with Acadia in 2006. Birungi was the Montreal Alouettes’ fourth round (32nd overall) selection of the 2006 CFL Canadian College Draft.
