HITS
QB Anthony Calvillo, MTL – The knock on Calvillo has been his slower than usual start, but the 13-year veteran quieted his naysayers with a prime-time showing against the Blue Bombers. Calvillo completed on 60 percent of his passes for three touchdowns and no interceptions. His 28 fantasy-point performance was two better than Kerry Joseph and four better than Dave Dickenson to rank highest among quarterbacks for the week.
RB Robert Edwards, MTL – Kudos to the Alouettes for finding a way to make Edwards an offensive weapon on Saturday. Heading into Week 5 Winnipeg had by far the league’s best defence against the run, allowing 30 ground yards per game. So instead of slamming Edwards into the pile, Montreal slipped him underneath where he made the first two touchdown catches of his CFL career.
WR Jason Armstead, SSK – The Roughriders appear to have found a way to get the most of their dispersal pick and certainly made me look stupid after I vehemently guarded against using him. The burner has a history of being inconsistent, but had six catches for 124 yards and two touchdowns, giving him his second 20-plus point outing in the last two weeks. Pick 10 Challenge players are catching on, as Armstead already ranks as the second-most added receiver for Week 6.
K Paul McCallum, BC – McCallum hit on all four of his field goals against his former club Friday to tie Damon Duval in Montreal for the best showing of the week. The 36-year-old has been near perfect, making eight-of-nine in the last two games. It’s too bad B.C. lost both of them.
MISSES
QB Henry Burris, CGY – Burris wasn’t a complete miss in Week 5, but his 18 points were five under his season average and a little disappointing for those who banked on him for a better game against a soft Hamilton pass defence. His fourth-quarter hookup with Ken-Yon Rambo and 50 rushing yards saved a poor outing.
RB Charles Roberts, WPG – The Alouettes did a tremendous job shutting down Roberts holding him to 38 rushing yards and 2.7 yards per carry. Roberts is the most-active part of any offence in the league averaging about 25 touches per game. Montreal limited him to 15 on Saturday and just six fantasy points.
WR Nik Lewis, Jeremaine Copeland and Elijah Thurmon, CGY – Hamilton silenced this dynamic trio of receivers, keeping them to a combined seven fantasy points when they usually average around ten points each – quite an accomplishment.
SB Geroy Simon, BC – Overall it was an off-weekend for slotbacks around the league. Simon, however, performed to the least of his potential, getting just five of his 17.75-point average. Cahoon garnered six points, while Milt Stegall had three. Hamilton’s Terry Vaughn posted the highest numbers, but his seven points weren’t enough to make much difference in the overall standings.
K Troy Westwood, WPG – Some looked to Westwood with the anticipation of a battle of field goal kicks against Montreal. The longtime Blue Bomber did successfully kick two, but his seven points were three under his season average. Style points for the moustache didn’t factor into his score.
