Fantasy Status Report: The running back carousel

Geoff Robins/CFL.ca

TSN CFL Fantasy presented by LeoVegas is easy to play with just seven roster spots and a $40,000 salary cap.

However, success does require a healthy team, with all seven players in active CFL lineups. With such small rosters, an empty slot can be a devastating blow to your week’s score.

In addition, practice reports can be the source of hidden gems that produce big numbers despite low ownership percentage, providing an edge over the rest of the field.

With that, CFL.ca breaks down some of the critical roster notes for each game.

Calgary at Winnipeg
Friday | 8:30 p.m. ET

Chris Streveler, QB, WPG

After being injured last week, Chris Streveler ($9,512) will not dress for Friday’s contest vs. Calgary. Zach Collaros ($9,512) will get the start instead.

Zach Collaros, QB, WPG

Zach Collaros ($5,896) will be the Bombers’ starter on Friday vs. Calgary, after Chris Streveler ($9,512) suffered an injury. Collaros has a chance to make an impact for a Winnipeg offence that’s struggled in recent weeks.

Don Jackson, RB, CGY

Stamps running back Don Jackson ($6,711) is listed as the backup to Ante Milanovic-Litre ($2,500). Whether he even dresses or not is up in the air at this point, making Jackson an option to avoid against Winnipeg’s top flight run defence.

Terry Williams, RB, CGY

Terry Williams ($4,184) will miss Friday’s game vs. Winnipeg. Williams has been Calgary’s returner and change of pace back. No word yet on who will handle return duties in his absence.

Ante Milanovic-Litre, RB, CGY

Despite Don Jackson ($6,711) returning to practice, Ante Milanovic-Litre ($2,500) is listed as the starter for Friday’s game against Winnipeg. Milanovic-Litre is a bargain at that price, but buyer beware against a top-ranked Winnipeg run defence.

Hamilton at Montreal
Saturday | 1:00 p.m. ET

Vernon Adams Jr., QB, MTL

It doesn’t appear Vernon Adams Jr. ($11,629) is in danger of missing time this week. Khari Jones told the Montreal Gazette’s Herb Zurkowsky that some players could be rested, but only if they’re in need of the time off.

William Stanback, RB, MTL

Alouettes running back William Stanback ($7,608) won’t play vs. the Ticats on Saturday. The Als are likely resting Stanback for the playoffs. Jeremiah Johnson ($5,987) will start in his place.

DeVier Posey, WR, MTL

Alouettes receiver DeVier Posey ($6,861) will miss Saturday’s game vs. Hamilton. Posey was injured during last week’s win over the Argos, and there’s no reason for the Als to risk further injury.

Chris Matthews, WR, MTL

The Alouettes will move Chris Matthews ($3,186) to slotback for Saturday’s game vs. Hamilton. That’s good news for Matthews, who’s in a position to be more involved in the game plan while replacing an injured DeVier Posey ($6,861).

Mario Alford, WR, MTL

Als returner Mario Alford ($2,500) missed practice on Tuesday and will not suit up this weekend. Shakeir Ryan ($2,500) will return kicks in his place.

Luke Tasker, WR, HAM

Ticats receiver Luke Tasker ($6,531) will return to the tarting lineup on Saturday. He’s been out since Aug. 17, but should become a big part of the Ticats’ offence the rest of the season.

Marcus Tucker, WR, HAM

Marcus Tucker ($3,974) will be the backup to Luke Tasker ($6,531). Tucker didn’t play last week and has minimal Fantasy value in a crowded Ticats’ receiving corps.

Jackson Bennett, RB, HAM

Canadian running back Jackson Bennett ($3,000) will not play vs. Montreal on Saturday. Tyrell Sutton ($6,108) has run away with the Ticats’ top running back job anyway.

Maleek Irons, RB, HAM

The Ticats have added Maleek Irons ($2,500) to their roster this week. The national running back will be the primary backup to Tyrell Sutton ($6,108), but there’s no guarantee he’ll see enough volume to make a Fantasy impact.

Jalin Marshall, WR, HAM

After scoring a touchdown last week, Jalin Marshall ($2,500) is out of the Ticats’ lineup this week. It’s unlikely we’ve seen the last of the talented young pass-catcher.

Ottawa at Toronto
Saturday | 4:00 p.m. ET

McLeod Bethel-Thompson, QB, TOR

Argos head coach Cory Chamblin says the team will rotate quarterbacks vs. Ottawa. That means McLeod Bethel-Thompson ($9,131) will start but won’t necessarily finish as the team looks to evaluate Dakota Prukop ($5,000) and Michael O’Connor ($5,000).

Derel Walker, WR, TOR

Argos leading receiver Derel Walker ($8,696) will miss a second straight game vs. the REDBLACKS. Chandler Worthy ($2,500) was his replacement last week and could be a popular Fantasy choice vs. Ottawa.

James Wilder Jr., RB, TOR

James Wilder Jr. ($7,493) it out for Saturday’s home finale against Ottawa. The Argos will start rookie A.J. Ouellette ($2,500) in his place.

Michael O’Connor, QB, TOR

Canadian quarterback Michael O’Connor ($5,000) is expected to take his first CFL snaps on Saturday vs. the REDBLACKS. The Argos plan to rotate their quarterbacks, which won’t help anyone — at least from a Fantasy perspective.

Dakota Prukop, QB, TOR

Dakota Prukop ($5,000) is expected to be part of the Argos’ quarterback rotation on Saturday. Prukop made his debut vs. the Eskimos earlier this season, but hasn’t played since.

Chris Rainey, RB, TOR

The Argos have placed Chris Rainey ($4,863) on the one-game injured list. With Rainey and Wilder sidelined, the door is wide open for A.J. Ouellette ($2,500) to make an impact.

A.J. Ouellette, RB, TOR

A.J. Ouellette ($2,500) will be the Argos’ starting running back on Saturday vs. Ottawa. With James Wilder Jr. ($7,493) scratched, Ouellett will have the lion’s share of touches in the Toronto backfield, making him an intriguing buy-low option at the position.

Will Arndt, QB, OTT

Will Arndt ($5,000) will make a third consecutive start this week vs. the Argos. Arndt struggled to sustain drives vs. the Ticats, but does draw a more enticing matchup against the bottom-ranked Argo defence.

John Crockett, RB, OTT

Despite returning to practice, John Crockett ($4,184) will miss another week for the REDBLACKS. Instead, Brendan Gillanders ($2,500) will get the start as Ottawa goes all Canadian at the position.

Brendan Gillanders, RB, OTT

Brendan Gillanders ($3,000) will make a third straight start at running back for the REDBLACKS. Gillanders has made a modest impact so far, but does offer value and boasts an intriguing matchup vs. the Argos.

Saskatchewan at Edmonton
Saturday | 7:00 p.m. ET

Trevor Harris, QB, EDM

Trevor Harris ($10,987) has been activated from the six-game injured list and will start vs. Saskatchewan. The Eskimos’ starting quarterback has been sidelined since Sept. 7 after compiling a 15-4 touchdown to interception ratio.

C.J. Gable, RB, EDM

Running back C.J. Gable ($7,996) remains out of the Eskimos’ lineup. Shaq Cooper ($5,721) will make his third start of the season in his absence.

Logan Kilgore, QB, EDM

Logan Kilgore ($5,830) returns to the backup role with Trevor Harris ($10,987) back from injury this week. Kilgore had his ups and downs in the starting role, but the offence is better off with Harris.

Tevaun Smith, WR, EDM

Tevaun Smith ($4,329) will return to the Eskimos’ starting lineup this week. Smith was sidelined before the Eskimos’ bye week but has enjoyed a solid first season in the CFL with 457 yards and four touchdowns on 43 catches.

Emmanuel Arceneaux, WR, SSK

Riders receiver Emmanuel Arceneaux ($4,366) returns to a starting role this week vs. the Eskimos. He takes the spot of Jordan Williams-Lambert ($4,266) in what’s become an intriguing position battle heading into the playoffs.

Jordan Williams-Lambert, WR, SSK

Recently-signed Jordan Williams-Lambert ($4,366) will be a backup for Saturday’s game vs. Edmonton. The sophomore Rider hasn’t made the impact many envisioned since returning from the NFL.
