Fantasy Status Report: Tasker out, Daniels questionable

Arthur Ward, CFL.ca

TSN CFL Fantasy presented by LeoVegas is easy for any fan to play, with just seven roster spots and a $40,000 salary cap.

However, success does require a healthy team, with all seven players in active CFL lineups. With such small rosters, a wasted position can be a devastating blow to your week’s score.

In addition, practice reports can be the source of hidden gems that produce big numbers despite low ownership percentage, providing an edge over the rest of the field.

With that, CFL.ca breaks down some of the critical roster notes for each game.

DaVaris Daniels, WR, EDM

For the second straight week DaVaris Daniels ($7,370) looks to be a game time decision in the Esks’ offence. He’s listed as a backup to Kenny Stafford ($4,731) but could be a pre-game scratch. Daniels is not a recommended option this week as his role remains a mystery.

Martese Jackson, RB, EDM

Running back and returner Martese Jackson ($3,505) remains the Esks’ primary returner and will also back up C.J. Gable ($8,334) on offence. Jackson only totaled 3.3 points last week, all via the return, and has yet to make an impact on offence in 2019 — yet the low price tag makes him an interesting value pick at the position if needed.

Chris Matthews, WR, WPG

After missing the season-opener, Chris Matthews ($3,500) will make his 2019 debut on Thursday. Matthews, who will start at slotback, is a popular buy-low option across Fantasy after helping the Stampeders win the Grey Cup last November.

Lucky Whitehead, WR, WPG

With Kenny Lawler ($2,500) sidelined, Lucky Whitehead ($2,500) will make his second consecutive start for the Bombers. The speedy receiver/returner will line up in the slot and could also see time as a returner, though Charles Nelson ($2,500) is expected to get most of the special teams opportunities. Whitehead caught just a single pass in his debut, though Matt Nichols did target him deep in Week 1.

Charles Nelson, WR, WPG

Charles Nelson ($2,500) is listed as the Bombers’ primary returner this week, though it’s been mentioned he could also take reps from Lucky Whitehead ($2,500) at receiver. Both players seem interchangeable at this point and while there’s plenty of risk, the minimum price tag could draw some interest.

Kenny Lawler, WR, WPG

Kenny Lawler ($2,500) has been added to the Bombers’ injured list and won’t play in Week 3. Lawler had two catches for 19 yards in a Week 1 victory over BC.

Antonio Pipkin, QB, MTL

The Alouettes will be without Antonio Pipkin ($7,495) for the next 4-6 weeks, according to TSN’s Dave Naylor. The 23-year-old completed just seven of 17 attempts in the season-opener and is at risk of losing his job to Vernon Adams ($5,571).

Jeremiah Johnson, RB, MTL

The Alouettes will sit Jeremiah Johnson ($6,446) for the second straight week. The veteran has yet to make his debut with the Als and, at this point, appears to be an insurance policy in case anything happens to bell cow back William Stanback ($7,356).

Vernon Adams Jr., QB, MTL

With Pipkin sidelined, Vernon Adams Jr. ($5,571) is getting a look as the team’s starting quarterback. It’s a big opportunity for the 26-year-old, who was once considered one of the top QB prospects in the league. Adams can do damage with his arm and legs and considers an affordable price tag, but also presents some risk in a matchup with the Ticats.

Luke Tasker, WR, HAM

Ticats receiver Luke Tasker ($8,960) will miss a second straight week due to injury. Tasker was a limited participant in practice but just wasn’t ready to go. Jaelon Acklin ($2,500) and Marcus Tucker ($2,500) could be the biggest benefactors on an offence with high scoring upside in Week 3.

Anthony Coombs, WR, HAM

The Ticats have activated Anthony Coombs ($3,063) from the practice roster. The former third overall pick could have a limited role in Week 3, though he’ll start as a backup. He’s certainly someone to monitor for the future.

Josh Crockett, WR, HAM

The Ticats will be without rookie receiver Josh Crockett ($2,500) in Week 3 after he was placed on the injured list. Jaelon Acklin ($2,500) and Marcus Tucker ($2,500) have both been thrust into starting roles with injuries to Crockett and Tasker.

Marcus Tucker, WR, HAM

Marcus Tucker ($2,500) will get a second straight start in place of the injured Luke Tasker ($8,960). Tucker made the most of his opportunity last week, hauling in six passes for 81 yards, and is an intriguing value buy against the Alouettes.

Jaelon Acklin, WR, HAM

After putting up five catches for 59 yards last week, Jaelon Acklin ($2,500) will start vs. Montreal. Acklin was a popular target in pre-season and is on the fast-track to becoming a full-time CFL starter.
