#UniversityBlitz Week 6: Canada West and Panda

Calgary Dinos

The university season is creeping into its second half, and Week 6 promises a ton of entertaining games across the country along with the marquee matchup of the regular season: Panda Game.

The uOttawa Gee-Gees (#9, 3-1) and Carleton Ravens (#5, 4-1) will square off at TD Place — home of the CFL’s REDBLACKS — on Saturday afternoon in a grudge match which has taken on significant meaning since Nate Behar’s 2014 Hail Mary reception.

Each year has seen attendance and media awareness increase around the game, and with the Ravens and Gee-Gees looking like contenders for the first time in a few years, the contest will have added importance in the standings.

Also in Ontario, top-ranked Western (#1, 4-0) visits Kingston for a classic matchup with a game Queen’s (3-2) squad.

Elsewhere in the country, the UBC T-Birds — a shocking 1-3 on the season — head to Alberta to face the hapless Golden Bears (0-4) in a must-win game. Quarterback Michael O’Connor and the ‘Birds can’t afford any kind of slip-up in Edmonton.

The other two Canada West matchups are mouth-watering, too.

Saskatchewan (#6, 3-1) visits Calgary (#3, 3-1) in a battle of the conference’s two top squads. Come for the playoff implications, but stay for the awesome Kyle Siemens vs. Adam Sinagra — combined pass touchdowns: 24 — quarterback matchup.

Regina (#10, 2-2) heads across the prairies for a date with Manitoba (2-2) in a game with big-time meaning for both squads. Quarterbacks Noah Picton (REG) and Des Catellier (MAN) are second and third in the country respectively in passing yards-per-game, so buckle up.

Out East, Saint Mary’s (#7, 4-0) visits St. FX (3-1) in a game which could decide home-field advantage in the AUS playoffs; the undefeated Huskies have the best defence in the AUS (15.3 points allowed per-game), while X has the best offence (30 points per-game).

The Ravens are favoured by all of our alumni/experts, with Saint Mary’s and Manitoba expected to win their pivotal mid-season battles too. Laval is going to Laval, as they have for the last decade and a half.
