Campus Roundup: Welcome back, Laval

In case their 13-point win at Sherbrooke in Week 1 cast some doubt, the Laval Rouge et Or’s 47-9 dismantling of Concordia in Week 2 sent a message: Glen Constantin’s program is still elite.

The Rouge et Or dominated both sides of the ball, limiting Concordia to just nine first downs — four of which came in the fourth quarter, with the game out of reach — at the same time quarterback Hugo Richard hit his stride with the offence.

That game followed the expected blueprint in front of 9,000-plus fans in Quebec City, but there were two upsets elsewhere: St. FX beat Acadia in overtime, while McGill earned its first win since September 9, 2017 with a 19-8 decision over Sherbrooke.

Beyond Laval, the country’s other power-hitting programs also came to play in Week 2; Laurier smashed Queen’s 44-18 in Kingston, UBC running back Kory Nagata racked up 229 all-purpose yards in a 30-20 T-Birds win over Manitoba and Calgary put up 599 yards of offence en route to a 49-35 shootout win over Regina.

The upsets caused quite the upheaval in #UniversityBlitz, as our CFL players-slash-experts got burned for taking the favourites over St. FX and McGill.

Tough week all around.

Funny that after Nate Behar’s exchange on Instagram with Queen’s director of player personnel (and former CFL player) Shomari Williams, Behar’s only correct pick of the week would be anti-Queen’s.

Keep that Carleton-Queen’s matchup circled Sept. 15.

Hot: Quarterback Tre Ford and the Waterloo Warriors are off to a 2-0 start, with an offence that has looked fantastic thus far. How fantastic? Ford has thrown more touchdowns (10) than incompletions (9). Caveat: The wins were against Windsor and Toronto — teams with a combined two wins since opening day of 2017 — and UW now faces Carleton (1-1, #7), Laurier (2-0, #4) and Western (1-0, #1). Woof.

Not: The Alberta Golden Bears got routed in Saskatoon, and did not look good in the process. Three interceptions, a 0-spot on the scoreboard and an inability to stop the Huskies’ passing game spell trouble for U. of A. as it enters a critical home-and-home set with Manitoba (0-1).
