More than football: CFL players shine in communities

Players across the CFL have been doing big things in their respective communities over the past few days; Greg Ellingson and the rest of the Ottawa REDBLACKS were out in force at Cap Pride, while members of the Saskatchewan Roughriders are doing their part to help improve the lives of the province’s youth.

In Saskatchewan, veteran Jovon Johnson is set to give away a whopping 480 backpacks — complete with school supplies — to area children in need.

Roughriders receiver Naaman Roosevelt has partnered with KidSport Saskatchewan to help give children in need the opportunity to play sports.

The program has already paid dividends, with over $27,000 raised and its impact evident.

People often talk about the heart of this league as what sets it apart: The work that players are doing in their respective communities is a testament to that.

UPDATE: Toronto Arognauts running back James Wilder Jr. has enlisted the help of teammates and Nissan to send kids off to school with backpacks and books.

Awesome.
