Sherman mum on Als’ QB situation

MONTREAL — Antonio Pipkin has given the Montreal Alouettes something to think about.

The 23-year-old was cut back in camp and then signed again recently following injuries to Drew Willy, Jeff Mathews and Vernon Adams. And, given the opportunity, Pipkin has thrived, going 1-1 in two starts while throwing for 520 yards and a touchdown, including a win Friday night over the Toronto Argonauts.

Some are even wondering whether he’ll start in Week 12 — even if Johnny Manziel is healthy.

“That’s not my call, but I’ll be ready,” Pipkin told reporters after the game.

Alouettes head coach Mike Sherman was also mum on the team’s quarterback situation, but said he was impressed by Pipkin’s ability Friday night vs. Toronto. Pipkin threw for 303 yards, scoring twice on the ground and setting up an eventual game-winning field goal from Boris Bede with 1:10 left in the game.

“His ability to stay in the pocket, and then when it’s time to get out of there he gets the hell out of there,” said Sherman. “We’ll go back and look at the tape and we’ll go into next week and see where we’re at and make evaluations during the week, not after an emotional win.”

Once Manziel is healthy, Pipkin’s recent play could make for quite a contentious debate over the coming week. Sherman, however, doesn’t see it being an issue either way.

“I don’t see any dilemma whatsoever, no.”
