Canada Wins World Junior Title

The Canadian National Junior Team successfully defended gold at the 2018 IFAF U-19 World Championship in Mexico City, Mex. this weekend.

Playing in a hostile environment against tournament host Mexico in the final, Team Canada earned a 13-7 win.

Canada opened the scoring on a 31-yard Antoine Couture field goal; quarterback Tyson Dueck (McMaster) then found Freud Jean Ernst Cesar for a touchdown to make it a 10-point game.

Mexico cut the lead to 10-7 with a third-quarter touchdown, but it was as close as the hosts — playing in front of 33,000 fans — would come.

Couture hit another field goal in the fourth quarter to secure the win.

This year’s edition was the fifth since the tournament began in 2009; Canada has claimed three (2012, ’16, ’18) of those five titles, with the United States — third-place, this time around — winning the other two (2009, ’14).

Led by head coach Steve Sumarah (Carleton), the Canadians went undefeated in the tournament with wins over Sweden (49-6), Japan (28-22) and Mexico (13-7).
