Sights, Sounds and Social: Week 3

Between Friday’s ‘Live Mic’ adventure, #HumboldtStrong Night in Regina and some phenomenal community initiatives in Edmonton, there was plenty going on around the Canadian Football League in Week 3.

Let’s get into it:

Thursday | Calgary 24, Ottawa 14

First off, the game: Calgary pulled away in the second half for another home victory. Dave Dickenson’s team is crazy good on home turf.

Now, to the social:

The James Barker Band rocked McMahon Stadium at the half, and drew an elite tweet from CFL.ca writer Chris O’Leary.

Well-played, Mr. O’Leary.

Following the win, the Stamps went behind-the-scenes for game balls; insider access like this is hard to come by, and gives fans a rare look inside a professional locker room.

Friday | Hamilton 31, Winnipeg 17

Old friends visited the tailgate at the Ticats’ home opener, as some rare Baltimore Stallions gear made an appearance outside Tim Hortons Field.

On the field, it was the Jeremiah Masoli show on offence and the Jerry Glanville show on defence; Hamilton’s QB threw for over 350 yards, while the coordinator’s defence stymied Chris Streveler and the Winnipeg offence.

‘Live Mic’ night was a success, captivating viewers on both sides of the border with perspectives from inside the huddle and on the sidelines.

The Ticats also took us inside the locker room following the win, and we caught a bit of head coach June Jones’s post-game talk.

Later on Canada Day weekend, Ticats O-lineman Mike Filer and co. made it out to the Queen’s Plate.

Edmonton 41, BC 22

A slow start didn’t faze the Edmonton Eskimos on Saturday night, as they poured it on in the second half en route to a  19-point win over divisional rivals BC.

Raise your hand if you’re ready for week 3 🙋🏾‍♂️

The Eskimos were, indeed, ready for Week 3.

C.J. Gable went off for 165 yards, while Christophe Mulumba and Kwaku Boateng each recorded a pair of sacks to help limit Jonathon Jennings and the BC offence.

As per usual, Edmonton was shining off the field as well.

Something special about a Friday night in northern Alberta.

Montreal 23, Saskatchewan 17

The final game of Week 3 was a matchup between the Riders and the Als on #HumboldtStrong Night in Regina.

As expected, the stadium was packed in another incredible show of the province’s support for those affected by the tragic April 6 bus crash.

Riders receiver Naaman Roosevelt rocked a Humboldt jersey and some new cleats for the game.

One sign in particular — supporting Humboldt players Layne Matechuk and Morgan Gobeil, who are still recovering in hospital — pulled at the heartstrings.

The Riders put on a classy ceremony, and members of the junior hockey team were honoured at Mosaic Stadium.

On the field, however, Saturday’s game was all about Montreal: Mike Sherman’s Alouettes looked like a different team from the one that lost 56-10 on home turf in Week 2, and got enough big plays in all three phases to earn a much-needed win.

The Als defence had four interceptions on the night, and celebrated accordingly.

When it was all said and done — the weight of the 10-month losing streak lifted — players celebrated.

Group photos indeed.

Great Team Win
