FA Most Wanted: A premier defensive back

TORONTO — Where there are skilled receivers, there’s bound to be a talented defensive back waiting right around the corner.

In a league that passes the ball more often than not, a shutdown defensive back is imperative to have on a team’s roster.

That’s why T.J. Heath – one of the league’s premier players on the defensive side of the ball – will be attractive to any team if he hits the free agent market on Feb 13.

The 30-year-old is the top-ranked defensive back and is the eighth ranked free agent according to CFL.ca:

Heath had his most productive season in 2017, picking off five passes, collecting 64 tackles, one sack and scoring a touchdown.

The 30-year-old split the 2016 season between the Toronto Argonauts and Blue Bombers. In his first 10 games with the Argos, the six-foot-one, 181-pound defensive back collected 37 tackles, three special teams tackles and five interceptions. The Alexandria, Atl. Native then played six games with the Bombers and tallied 14 tackles, two special teams tackles and two interceptions.

Heath is a two-time CFL and West Division All-Star, earning both statuses in 2016 and 2017.

Before moving north of the border, Heath spent six years in the NFL and spent time with the Jacksonville Jaguars (2011), Cincinnati Bengals (2012), Buffalo Bills (2012-2013), Cleveland Browns (2013-2014), Miami Dolphins (2014), Carolina Panthers (2015), Atlanta Falcons (2015) and New York Giants (2015).
