TORONTO — Three catches, 47 yards, zero touchdowns. At the end of the REDBLACKS’ Week 12 loss, one of Fantasy’s most expensive receivers had recorded only 4.7 points.
It wasn’t the line we’re accustomed to from Greg Ellingson, the CFL’s leading receiver in both yards and Fantasy points, but at the end of the day, that shouldn’t deter Fantasy players from picking what’s usually a sure bet for consistent points.
With his 152.0 Fantasy points this season, Ellingson is the 10th-ranked fantasy player overall and, by far, the No. 1 receiver:
PLAYER | GAMES | TEAM | POINTS | AVG | SALARY |
Greg Ellingson | 12 | OTT | 152.0 | 12.7 | $6,663 |
Diontae Spencer | 12 | OTT | 130.7 | 10.9 | $6,490 |
S.J. Green | 11 | TOR | 130.2 | 11.8 | $6,225 |
Naaman Roosevelt | 10 | SSK | 122.0 | 12.2 | $7,460 |
Duron Carter | 10 | SSK | 119.4 | 11.9 | $7,574 |
Brad Sinopoli | 12 | OTT | 109.8 | 9.2 | $4,717 |
Darvin Adams | 11 | WPG | 109.0 | 9.9 | $6,104 |
B.J. Cunningham | 11 | MTL | 106.9 | 9.7 | $5,106 |
Brandon Zylstra | 9 | EDM | 104.3 | 11.6 | $6,168 |
Ryan Lankford | 11 | WPG | 102.6 | 9.3 | $4,202 |
There are plenty of interesting findings from the top 10 Fantasy receivers of 2017 thus far. For instance, three Ottawa REDBLACKS find themselves in the top-six, meaning volume clearly isn’t an issue in Ottawa’s offence.
The same thing goes for the Riders’ dynamic duo of Duron Carter and Naaman Roosevelt. While some Fantasy players may avoid playing two receivers from the same team, there should be no lack of confidence starting Carter and Roosevelt at the same time.
Here’s the obvious takeaway: Even without Trevor Harris (shoulder) under centre, Ellingson is the closest thing there is to a ‘must-play’.
Let’s look at Ellingson’s game log for 2017:
WEEK | OPPONENT | REC | YDS | TDS | AVG | LONG | POINTS |
12 | HAM | 3 | 47 | 0 | 15.7 | 30 | 4.7 |
11 | MTL | 4 | 89 | 1 | 22.3 | 42 | 14.9 |
10 | BC | 2 | 40 | 0 | 20 | 33 | 4 |
9 | HAM | 10 | 155 | 1 | 15.5 | 39 | 21.5 |
8 | EDM | 4 | 47 | 1 | 11.8 | 25 | 10.7 |
7 | WPG | 5 | 59 | 1 | 11.8 | 20 | 11.9 |
5 | MTL | 6 | 149 | 1 | 24.8 | 80 | 20.9 |
5 | TOR | 3 | 59 | 1 | 19.7 | 31 | 11.9 |
4 | EDM | 5 | 66 | 0 | 13.2 | 34 | 6.6 |
3 | TOR | 10 | 170 | 1 | 17 | 38 | 23 |
2 | CGY | 7 | 133 | 0 | 19 | 59 | 13.3 |
1 | CGY | 8 | 66 | 0 | 8.3 | 17 | 6.6 |
There’s some element of boom or bust here, with Ellingson recording fewer than 6.7 points once every three games (four times this season). But it’s been mostly boom, because outside of those four poor outings, Ellingson has ranged between 10.7 points and 23 points.
What’s curious is that Ellingson’s salary has dropped relative to those around him. Newcomer Derel Walker has the highest salary at $8,046, while the Saskatchewan duo of Carter and Roosevelt is close behind.
Ellingson at $6,663 may feel like a nice bargain considering he’s been the game’s top-producing receiver — although it’s not a sure thing with the absence of Trevor Harris under centre.
