Quarterback Index: Jennings returns to the spotlight

Jimmy Jeong/CFL.ca

The CFL.ca Quarterback Index is a weekly power ranking of quarterbacks across the CFL. The ranking reflects recent performance, historical value, statistical indicators, team success and overall on-field evaluation.

TORONTO — CFL quarterbacks have enjoyed relative health in 2017, at least until now. Week 12 sidelined three starters as Travis Lulay, Kevin Glenn and Trevor Harris were all out of action before the fourth quarter had arrived.

While we wait for word on all three, it’s time for the backups to step in — including Jonathon Jennings.

Travis Lulay suffered what could be a season-ending knee injury in Week 12’s win over Montreal (The Canadian Press)

Jennings joins Brandon Bridge and Drew Tate as new names in this week’s QB Index. And while Bo Levi Mitchell holds down his top-ranked position, there’s plenty of movement behind him.

Let’s hope Week 13 is nothing but good luck for the QBs. More in this week’s index:

BO LEVI MITCHELL CGY
THIS WEEK: 1 | LAST WEEK: 1

For the sixth time in seven games, Bo Levi Mitchell failed to cross the 300-yard plateau — yet the Stampeders haven’t lost over that span. Mitchell’s 52-8-2 record gives him the best quarterback winning percentage of all time, and if you need to know why, Saturday’s fourth quarter heroics to defeat Edmonton are Exhibit A.

MIKE REILLY EDM
THIS WEEK: 2 | LAST WEEK: 3

After a bit of a late-summer slump, Mike Reilly broke out with 461 passing yards on 37-of-47 passing in the Labour Day rematch with Calgary. That bodes well for an Eskimos team looking to end a rare four-game losing streak this week in Toronto.

KEVIN GLENN SSK
THIS WEEK: 3 | LAST WEEK: 2

A couple of interceptions cost the Riders a chance for the sweep vs. the Bombers. Now, for Kevin Glenn, the question is when he’ll be back from an injury to his throwing hand. Glenn has played at an MOP level this season, carrying the resurgent Riders to a 5-5 record thus far.

MATT NICHOLS WPG
THIS WEEK: 4 | LAST WEEK: 4

After three interceptions in two games, Matt Nichols didn’t throw a pick in a 48-28 Banjo Bowl win over the Roughriders. Nichols is near the top of the list of MOP candidates heading into the final stretch of the season, with his Bombers in contention for the West Division title.

RICKY RAY TOR
THIS WEEK: 5 | LAST WEEK: 6

At age 37, Ricky Ray has a chance to reach new career heights. But while he’s on pace for 5,683 passing yards, the win column is what matters moving forward for the veteran quarterback and his team. With a strong defence and an all-time great QB, the Argos are in the running to win the East.

JONATHON JENNINGS BC
THIS WEEK: 6 | LAST WEEK: UNRANKED

Last week, it looked like Jonathon Jennings would get some time to sit and think about his early-season struggles. Plans have changed for the third-year Lions pivot, who’s back in the driver’s seat following a long-term injury to Travis Lulay. Jennings looked like his old self in a win over the Als.

JEREMIAH MASOLI HAM
THIS WEEK: 7 | LAST WEEK: 9

Jeremiah Masoli has injected life into the Ticats’ offence, winning two straight starts since taking over as the team’s starting quarterback. The numbers (54.9%, 595 yards, 1 TD, 2 INT) aren’t flattering, but Masoli’s dual-threat ability has played a key role in restoring the Ticats’ playoff hopes.

DREW TATE OTT
THIS WEEK: 8 | LAST WEEK: UNRANKED

With Trevor Harris in a sling, Drew Tate shook off the rust with 114 yards and a touchdown on 8-of-13 passing vs. the Ticats. A long-time CFL backup, Tate gets a turn at the helm of one of the CFL’s most explosive offences as Harris recovers from his shoulder injury.

DARIAN DURANT MTL
THIS WEEK: 9 | LAST WEEK: 8

The trip out west was unkind to Darian Durant, whose Alouettes dropped their fourth straight contest in BC. The good news: For the third time this season, the Als’ veteran quarterback didn’t throw an interception. More production is needed with matchups against Ottawa and Toronto on tap.

BRANDON BRIDGE SSK
THIS WEEK: 10 | LAST WEEK: UNRANKED

While there’s no word on the status of Kevin Glenn, there is some concern around the Riders’ veteran pivot. Meanwhile, Brandon Bridge flashed more of his potential in a Banjo Bowl loss to the Riders, hurdling a defender on his way to a highlight-reel touchdown run. His first start as a Rider could be arriving.

INJURED RESERVE

The REDBLACKS say Trevor Harris’ injury isn’t season-ending, but could sideline him a while (The Canadian Press)

TREVOR HARRIS OTT
THIS WEEK: IR | LAST WEEK: 5

Trevor Harris was emerging as a legitimate MOP candidate before his shoulder injury in Week 12. We may find out soon just how valuable he is to the Ottawa REDBLACKS.

TRAVIS LULAY BC
THIS WEEK: IR | LAST WEEK: 7

In a cruel twist of fate, Travis Lulay suffered what appears to be a season-ending knee injury vs. Montreal.
