Weekly Insights: Trestman returns to his roots

TORONTO — This week when the Toronto Argonauts head to Montreal to take on the Alouettes, Marc Trestman will be making his return to where it all started for him in the CFL.

When the Toronto Argonauts named Trestman as their head coach earlier this year, there was a lot to get excited about. After all, the veteran coach knows the Canadian game – and knows it very well – after spending five seasons as the Als bench boss.

As head coach between 2008 and 2012, Trestman had a surplus of success, leading the squad to a 59-31 record and won 36 of 45 games at home. He led the team to four first place finishes and made the playoffs in all five years – three of which ended in Grey Cup appearances including the Als back to back championships in 2009 and 2010.

And to top it all off, Trestman knows how to run an offence, as three of his teams led the CFL in scoring.

Trestman’s return has been highly anticipated but he is likely focusing on just one thing this week – defeating his former team and holding on to the top spot in the East Division.

Toronto’s head coach isn’t the only one who will be making a homecoming of sorts this week. General manager Jim Popp will head back to face the team he spent 21 years with. S.J. Green and Bear Woods are also returning to the place they first called home in the CFL, as they spent 10 and four seasons as members of the Alouettes, respectively.
