White out for season with torn ACL

EDMONTON — John White will miss the remainder of the 2017 season with a torn right ACL, the Edmonton Eskimos confirmed Monday.

White suffered the injury Friday night in the first quarter of his team’s Week 2 win over the Montreal Alouettes. The Esks’ running back was carted off the field after being hit immediately following a handoff.

Seen out of uniform with a brace on his leg, White’s injury was considered serious off the hop. Yet Monday’s news confirms another devastating road block in White’s young professional football career, which has also seen him overcome a season-ending Achilles injury in training camp in 2015.

White was coming off a stellar Week 1 in which he rushed for 104 yards and a touchdown in a season-opening win over the BC Lions in Vancouver. Back from injury in 2016, he carried for 886 yards and eight majors and added another 464 receiving yards out of the backfield.

Travon Van handled running back duties in White’s spot and is the next man up for the Eskimos, who are off in Week 3 following a 2-0 start to their season.
