Lions keep pace in Nissan Titan Power Rankings

The Canadian Press

TORONTO — Can anyone beat the Calgary Stampeders?

It looked like the Edmonton Eskimos were on pace to hand the Stamps their second loss of the season on Saturday night, but a second half comeback to send things to overtime proved otherwise. Calgary improved to 9-1-1 with the win in Edmonton and remain at the top of the Nissan Titan Power Rankings.

All eight other teams remain in the same position after their Week 12 performances – including the BC Lions who, led by Jeremiah Johnson’s three touchdowns, defeated the Montreal Alouettes 38-27.

The Stamps look unstoppable through the first 12 weeks of the 2016 season – they’ve won eight games in a row and remain at the top of the league. Last week, Calgary trailed Edmonton 17-3 at the half, but Bo Levi Mitchell led his team all the way back to take the Esks to overtime and eventually win the game. Can anyone stop the Stampeders?

BC wasted no time last week, scoring touchdowns on their first three possessions, on their way to victory over the Alouettes. Jeremiah Johnson rushed for three touchdowns in the victory and Jonathon Jennings completed 72.7 per cent of his passes for 341 yards and a touchdown. The Lions head into their Week 13 bye week with a 8-3 record – three points behind the streaking Stamps.

Winnipeg extended their winning streak to six last week – the longest streak for the club in 15 years – and have become a legitimate contender in the West Division. With the win also came a loss as running back Andrew Harris left the game with a lower-body injury. The Bombers are just two points behind the BC Lions as they host the Toronto Argonauts (who are equipped with freshly traded quarterback Drew Willy) this week.

It looked like repeat of Mark’s Labour Day in Week 13 with the Tiger-Cats trailing the Argonauts at the half. But this time, the end result was much different for the Tabbies. Zach Collaros couldn’t solve Toronto’s defence, only throwing for 300 yards – the lowest yardage since his return in Week 8. Returning home to Tim Horton’s Field this week to host the Als, the ‘Cats will look to catch Ottawa for first in the East.

The Eskimos looked like the reigning Grey Cup Champions last week to start their contest against the Stamps – scoring on the first throw of their first possession and holding Calgary to just three points in the first half. But Mike Reilly and co. couldn’t hold off the surging Stamps in the final thirty minutes of the ball game, falling to 5-6 on the season. Edmonton heads to Saskatchewan this week for a matchup against the 1-10 Roughriders.

Fresh off their Week 12 bye, the REDBLACKS will be well rested when they take on the Stampeders this week. Trevor Harris and co. hold just a one-point lead over the Tiger-Cats and Argonauts in the East, making a win in Calgary essential to stay ahead of the pack.

The Argos snapped their four game losing streak last week in the Labour Day rematch against the Ticats at home. Led by Dan LeFevour – making his first start in the double blue – Toronto impressed in the 33-21 victory. The Argos’ defence were stellar in the win, with TJ Heath collecting two interceptions and seven tackles before he was sent packing to Winnipeg following the contest.

Rakeem Cato made his first start of the season last week and the game didn’t end how he and the Als had hoped. Cato connected on 21-of-29 of his passes for 255 yards and a touchdown in the Alouettes’ 38-27 loss to the BC Lions. With Kevin Glenn getting traded to Winnipeg on Sunday, Cato could be who Montreal looks to for the rest of the season. The Als head to Hamilton for a meeting with the Tiger-Cats in Week 13.

The Roughriders fell to 1-10 on the season with their 17-10 loss against the Bombers in the annual Banjo Bowl. Naaman Roosevelt was a bright spot for Saskatchewan, collecting six catches for 121 yards and a touchdown in the loss while Darian Durant connected on 63.9 per cent of his passes for 282 yards. The Riders look to nab their second win of the season when they host the Eskimos next week.
