Nissan Titan Power Rankings: Bombers remain in top three

Matt Smith/CFL.ca

TORONTO — They’ve done it again.

The Calgary Stampeders defeated the Edmonton Eskimos 45-24 in Week 11 improving their record to 8-1-1 and extending their winning streak to seven. The Stamps haven’t lost a game since Week 1 and after their ride to victory against Edmonton, they kept themselves at the top of the Nissan Titan Power Rankings.

All eight other teams remain in the same position after their Week 11 performances – including the Winnipeg Blue Bombers who keep in the third spot after grabbing their fifth straight win.

It’s been ten weeks since the Stampeders have last lost a football game. Calgary has also won seven games in a row, which now presents the question: Will the Stamps ever lose again? With a win over the Esks in Week 11 fresh on their minds, and a 8-1-1 record, the Stamps head to Edmonton this week for the second half of a home-and-home with their provincial rival.

The Lions return home with two wins after their nine day road trip to Southern Ontario. First was a 29-23 victory over the REDBLACKS and second was a win over the Argonauts – led by Richie Leone’s field goal with zeros on the clock to lift them to a 16-13 win. BC hosts the Alouettes in Week 12, looking to gain ground on the Stamps for first in the West.

There was another buzzer beater in Week 11 – this time Justin Medlock booted the game winning field goal with zeros on the clock to solidify his team’s fifth straight victory. With the win, the Bombers improved to 6-4 and are just two points back from the BC Lions in the West. Winnipeg hosts the Riders for the second half of a home-and-home with Saskatchewan this week.

Despite heading into halftime down by 13 points, the Tiger-Cats clawed all the way back to defeat the Toronto Argonauts 49-36 (the highest scoring Labour Day game in history between the two teams). Zach Collaros started to use the ground game more last week, with C.J. Gable rushing 135 yards on 12 carries in the contest. Hamilton has now improved to a .500 team (5-5) and has claimed sole possession of second in the East.

Despite the Eskimos snapping their three game winning streak, they remain in the fifth spot in the Power Rankings. With his 52 receiving yards in the ball game, Adarius Bowman surpassed the 1000 yard mark and currently sits at the top of the league with 1008. Mike Reilly and his Eskimos will have a chance for redemption when they meet with Stampeders for the second time in as many weeks.

The REDBLACKS hold the top spot in the East after their Week 11 victory over the Montreal Alouettes. Trevor Harris, in his second game since returning from injury, threw for 282 yards and a touchdown in the win. Ottawa heads into a bye week in Week 12, and won’t return to the gridiron until Week 13 when they head West to take on the Stampeders.

Two games in one week didn’t do the Argonauts any favours. The week started with a heartbreaking last-second loss against the Lions before they headed to Hamilton to take on the Tiger-Cats. Despite Ricky Ray having himself an excellent outing on Labour Day, throwing for 386 yards and three touchdowns, his Argonauts couldn’t hold off the surging Ticats in the second half. Ray and co. will have an opportunity to snap their four game losing streak when they host the Ticats in Week 12.

Montreal fell to 3-7 on the season after their 19-14 loss to Ottawa last week. Missing their star reciever Duron Carter, who was serving his one game suspension, the Als had to rely on the Nik Lewis (92 yards on 10 catches and a touchdown) and no other receiver caught more than three passes. The Als visit BC to take on the Lions hoping to catch up to the Argos for third place in the East Division.

Saskatchewan has fallen to 1-9 on the season but they’re better than their record may imply. Last week, the Riders climbed back to a tie against the Blue Bombers, before Medlock’s game winning field goal sealed the victory for Winnipeg with no time left on the clock. The Riders also kept pace with the Eskimos in Week 10 so it’s only a matter of time before they turn things around in Riderville.
