TORONTO — For the second week in a row, the Ottawa REDBLACKS sit on top of the Nissan Titan Power Rankings. The REDBLACKS, led by quarterback Trevor Harris, showed in Week 2 that they have what it takes to win even without last year’s MOP, Henry Burris.
The Lions are 2-0 after a decisive win in Hamilton but how far could they climb? Meanwhile, the Stampeders and Argonauts are also on the rise after their Week 2 victories.

After REDBLACKS’ starting quarterback Henry Burris was placed on the six-game injured list last week, all eyes were on Trevor Harris to impress – and so far, he’s done just that. For the second week in a row, Harris and his REDBLACKS have topped their opponents and the Power Rankings. Wide receiver Chris Williams also starred in the 28-13 victory over Montreal making seven catches for 187 yards and one touchdown.

The Edmonton Eskimos remain in second place in the Power Rankings this week after the club spent Week 2 on a bye. After a Week 1 loss to Ottawa, the reining Grey Cup champs will be looking to improve to 1-1 in their match up against Saskatchewan in Week 3.

The Calgary Stampeders rose one spot in the Power Rankings following their 36-22 victory over the Winnipeg Blue Bombers. The Stamps offence, led by quarterback Bo Levi Mitchell, dazzled as the club improved to 1-1 and to second place in the West. Mitchell connected on 24-of-37 of his passes for 309 yards and two touchdowns. Running back Jerome Messam rushed 137 yards on 16 carries and wide receiver Marquay McDaniel had seven receptions for 116 yards.

Defence, defence, defence. That’s what the BC Lions brought to Tim Hortons Field in Week 2, defeating the Hamilton Tiger-Cats 28-3 and claiming sole possession of first place in the West. The defence, consisting of Solomon Elimimian, Adam Bighill and Loucheiz Purifoy, stifled the Ticats offence and kept them off the score sheet. Wide receivers Shawn Gore, who caught four passes for 116 yards, and Emmanuel Arceneaux, who had six receptions for 46 yards, were the favourite targets for quarterback Jonathon Jennings. Jennings has a solid outing completing 16-of-27 passes for 228 yards and a touchdown.

The Toronto Argonauts came out with a strong start in their 30-17 victory over the Saskatchewan Roughriders and moved up two spots in the Power Rankings. Quarterback Ricky Ray, who couldn’t seem to find his rhythm last week, got his offence into the game early on his way to improving his team to 1-1. Ray will have plenty of options to throw to next week, after finding seven different targets against the Riders, when his team visits B.C. to take on the Lions and their red hot defence.

What a difference a week makes. The Hamilton Tiger-Cats’ home opener didn’t exactly go as planned for the tabbies, who fell 28-3 to the BC Lions and plunged three spots in the Power Rankings. Jeremiah Masoli finished his night completing 26 of 39 passes for 248 yards and two interceptions – a far cry from his season opening performance in Week 1. Masoli and his teammates will have an opportunity to redeem themselves in front of their home crowd next week when they take on the Winnipeg Blue Bombers.

The Montreal Alouettes fell just one spot this week in the Power Rankings after their 28-13 loss to the Ottawa REDBLACKS. Quarterback Kevin Glenn connected on 26-of-41 passes for 259 yards and one touchdown in the loss. Losing to the number one team buys you a little bit of slack, but the Alouettes will be tested with the injured S.J. Green out for the season and Duron Carter (suspended) out of the lineup when they return from the bye in Week 4.

Although the Saskatchewan Roughriders lost against the Toronto Argonauts in Week 2, they still have something to be happy about – the return of Darian Durant. Durant, who made his first appearance since Week 1 of 2015, had a good first outing with the team. The veteran pivot completed 31-of-48 passes for 310 yards and one touchdown. The Riders will look to get in the win column next week when they take on Head Coach Chris Jones’ former team, the Edmonton Eskimos.

It was too little, too late again for the Bombers. A late fourth quarter surge wasn’t enough for Winnipeg to stage a comeback, leading to a 36-22 loss to the Stampeders in Week 2. A large chunk of Drew Willy’s 358 yards came late in the game, while the Winnipeg defence also struggled with containing Stamps quarterback Bo Levi Mitchell and his high-powered offence. The Bombers hope to get their first win of 2016 in Week 3 when they visit the Hamilton Tiger-Cats.
