Waiting Game: Messam looking to stay with Stamps?

CALGARY — Jerome Messam is hopeful he can return to Calgary before February’s free agent window opens.  At least according to his Twitter account.

Messam, who joined the Stampeders in a trade-deadline deal, became the feature back in Calgary late last season as Jon Cornish tried to battle back from injury.  With Cornish now retired, an opportunity for Messam to retain that role would allow the Stampeders to keep a proven every down tailback without upsetting the ratio set by Cornish and backup Matt Walter.

Two weeks remain before the Feb. 9th FA deadline and on the surface, Messam seems content with staying in Red and White.  He could also be using social media to force the hand of the Stampeders who have not commented publicly what their plans are with the bruising back.

Messam was having a stellar season with the Saskatchewan Roughriders, sitting second in the league in rushing with 1,280 yards from scrimmage at the time of the trade.  He picked up where he left off in his short time in Calgary, as a central figure in Calgary’s Western Semi-Final win over BC where he piled up 147 total yards.
