QB Scorecard and Starters: Smith stands out in finale

Collectively Canadian Football League quarterbacks accounted for 20 total touchdowns in Week 20, an impressive total. Plus, pivots across Canada took care of the football combining for just four giveaways – two interceptions and two fumbles lost. Lots of stellar play from player at the game’s most important position makes it tough to put together the QB Scorecard, but we’re up to the task.

1) Henry Burris, REDBLACKS
Week 20 stats: 28-37, 368 yards, 6 TD, 1 INT

Just when it appeared like Hamilton was on the verge of taking control of the game, Burris fired four second-half touchdown strikes to finish off an unbelievable season by the 40-year-old pivot.

2) Drew Tate, Stampeders
Week 20 stats: 18-22, 231 yards, 2 TD

No rust was shown by Calgary’s trusted backup. Tate was on point from the get-go in B.C. That should give the Stampeders plenty of confidence in his ability to come off the bench if needed and produce instantly.

3) Brett Smith, Riders
Week 20 stats: 14-19, 188 yards, 3 TD; 4 carries, 41 yards

With the score 24-6 in the fourth quarter, Smith made two touchdown throws, drove Saskatchewan into field position for the game-tying field goal and then found Weston Dressler for the game-winning score in overtime. It was quite the comeback engineered by the Riders’ rookie.

4) Brandon Bridge, Alouettes
Week 20 stats: 21-30, 220, 2 TD; 6 carries, 45 yards

Air Canada flashed play-making ability and showed poise in his first career start. Regardless of what Bridge’s passport says it would appear he has the goods required to be a starting quarterback in the three-down game.

5) Ricky Ray, Argos
Week 20 stats: 9-12, 89 yards, 1 TD

Toronto’s veteran passer played just over a quarter and led a touchdown drive on his final series of the game. Ray appeared to have a bit more zip on the football than we saw from him in Week 19 against B.C. That is a positive sign for the Argos moving into the playoffs.

6) Trevor Harris, Argos
Week 20 stats: 14-21, 210 yards, 1 TD, 1 INT

It was a solid outing from Harris, but once again his interception issues popped up. He was picked-off a league-worst 19 times in 2015 and that’s a large reason why Toronto is going with Ray as the starter in the post-season.

7) Jeremiah Masoli, Ticats
Week 20 stats: 11-21, 148 yards, 1 TD; 6 carries, 27 yards, 1 TD

Hamilton’s dual-threat signal caller entered the game in the second quarter and helped his team rally out of a 17-point hole to lead 20-17 in the third, but in the end Masoli couldn’t do enough.

8) Keith Price, Riders
Week 20 stats: 10-15, 140 yards, 1 TD

After a long drive that ended with a 32-yard touchdown to Ryan Smith to end the first quarter, Price couldn’t muster any more points for the Riders. That said, it appears he’s young and full of potential.

9) Travis Lulay, Lions
Week 20 stats: 14-20, 181 yards

Lulay’s arm looked to be the strongest during any point in 2015 in B.C.’s regular season finale, a positive sign for the 32-year-old.

10) Dominique Davis, Bombers
Week 20 stats: 16-25, 169 yards; 9 carries, 34 yards

As far as first career starts go, Davis put forth a solid effort. He displayed an ability to make plays with his arm and feet. Improved consistency will be important for Davis moving forward.

11) Bryant Moniz, Stampeders
Week 20 stats: 2-2, 29 yards, 1 TD; 6 carries, 33 yards, 1 TD

In eight total plays Moniz produced two touchdowns, which opened up Calgary’s lead.

12) Jacory Harris, Ticats
Week 20 stats: 3-6, 41 yards

It was a rough first start for Harris that didn’t last long. He went two-and-out with the Ticats’ offence three times in the first quarter and that led to Masoli taking over at quarterback in the second frame.
