Hamilton Tiger-Cats caretaker Bob Young announced today that he has completed an unsolicited hostile takeover of the Norwich City Football Club, a Premier League soccer team previously based out of Norwich, England.
Young has retained complete control of Norwich City FC and plans to relocate the team to Hamilton. The Canaries will begin playing at Tim Hortons Field, Hamilton’s brand-new, world-class sports facility, in 2015.
The Canaries are named after a small South African Yellow and Black bird, once used to test for poisonous gases in coal mines. These conveniently are also the colours of the Hamilton Tiger-Cats, making marketing the team to Southern Ontario sports fans that much easier.
“It’s with great pleasure that we bring the Canaries to Canada. It’s very appropriate that the first Premier League club based outside of England will play in Hamilton, the epicenter of North American sports culture,” said Young.
Young has also struck a partnership with the Hamilton International Airport to secure direct flights to Hamilton from Norwich International Airport on gamedays so existing loyal Canary season ticket holders can continue to attend home matches at Tim Hortons Field.
Norwich City FC was originally founded in 1902, and play in the Premier League – arguably the top soccer league in the world. Norwich finished 15th the standings in 2013 with a record of 8-16-8.
